Data Protection Officer (DPO)
Protect Privacy. Ensure Compliance. Build Digital Trust.
As businesses increasingly collect and process personal information, protecting privacy has become a critical corporate responsibility.
Data Protection Officers (DPOs) help organisations safeguard personal data, comply with privacy legislation, and manage risks involving information security and data breaches. From developing privacy policies to overseeing regulatory compliance, DPOs play an important role in protecting individual rights and maintaining public trust.
In Malaysia, amendments to the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA) have introduced mandatory DPO appointments for qualifying organisations, strengthening corporate accountability for personal data protection.

Stronger Data Protection Requirements
Since 1 June 2025, qualifying Malaysian data controllers and processors have been required to appoint DPOs. This requirement also applies to organisations conducting regular and systematic monitoring of personal data, such as online behaviour tracking, even where the numerical thresholds are not met.
Greater Corporate Accountability
Malaysia's Personal Data Protection (Amendment) Act 2024 introduced provisions strengthening organisational responsibilities, including DPO appointments and data breach notification requirements.
Managing Data Breach Risks
Malaysia's Data Breach Notification Guidelines establish a 72-hour reporting timeframe for personal data breaches that meet the regulatory notification criteria. DPOs help organisations coordinate incident responses and support compliance with these obligations.

DPOs help organisations balance the benefits of digital innovation with the responsibility to protect personal information, strengthen transparency, and maintain stakeholder trust.
